Gastroscopy & Colonoscopy
Easy to book. Time to take a look at your stomach. It is a nonsurgical procedure used to examine your digestive tract.
Gastroscopy (upper GI endoscopy) is a procedure that allows a doctor to view the inside of your body, this helps diagnose and treat symptoms and conditions that affect the esophagus, stomach, and upper intestine or duodenum.
GI Endoscopy
An upper GI endoscopy procedure or esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a procedure where a scope is inserted into the stomach via the throat and allows the doctor to examine your esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (part of your small intestine).
It is performed on patients who show symptoms such as persistent upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, difficulty swallowing or pain when swallowing, heartburn, or an unwanted bitter taste in the mouth.
EGDs are a valuable tool for:
- Detecting and removing potentially cancerous polyps
- Esophageal dilation
- Removing blockages in the throat or stomach
- Repairing bleeding ulcers
- Locating tumours
- Performing biopsies
- Avoiding X-rays to mitigate a patient's radiation exposure
- Diagnosing the cause of nausea, vomiting, and chest and stomach pains
Also, it is often used not only as a diagnostic test but also as a preventive one. Many people have a personal history (such as excessive use of NSAIDs) or family history (gastric cancer) that warrants continuous and periodic evaluation for possible injury. Taking care of our bodies is key to healthy ageing.
Colonoscopy
It is a standard test that allows your physician to look inside your large intestine. This procedure is used to detect possible ulcers, colon polyps, tumours, and areas of inflammation or bleeding as well as to diagnose the causes of unexplained changes in bowel habits. A colonoscopy can catch early signs of cancer in the colon and rectum, making it a crucial screening procedure.
Reasons to have a colonoscopy:
- Bleeding from the rectum
- Blood in the stools
- Pus or mucus in the stools
- Unexplained abdominal pain
- Changes in bowel habits such as unexplained and long-lasting diarrhoea
- Screening for colorectal cancer
Also, GI doctors can utilize other tools during a colonoscopy to take samples of tissue from abnormal-looking growths so that they can be tested to see if or what type of surgery may be necessary.
Capsule Endoscopy
Capsule Endoscopy lets your doctor examine the lining of the middle part of your gastrointestinal tract, duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. The most common reason for doing a capsule endoscopy is to search for a cause of bleeding from the small intestine. It may also be useful for detecting polyps, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease), ulcers, and tumours of the small intestine.
