Which are the most common lab tests?
Complete blood count (CBC)
This set of tests analyzes your blood, including red and white blood cells and platelets.
Lipid profile
A complete cholesterol test is also called a lipid panel or lipid profile. These tests measure levels of cholesterol and other fats in your blood.
Comprehensive metabolic panel
The test provides information about:
- Blood sugars, the primary energy source for your cells
- Calcium, potassium, and sodium, minerals that support nerve and muscle functioning
- Chloride, which regulates fluid levels
- Creatine, and other waste products produced by the kidneys
- Electrolytes, and other fluids
- Enzyme levels, the signal of abnormal liver issues
Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
This blood test measures levels of TSH to determine how your thyroid is working. Results help confirm or rule out thyroid disorders, including:
- Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), may cause anxiety, rapid heart rate, bulging eyes, and more
- Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), may cause weight gain, tiredness, sensitivity to cold and other symptoms
Helicobacter pylori
H. pylori is a bacteria that commonly causes stomach and small intestinal ulcers and is associated with more severe acid reflux (GERD). It can be measured by your breath and stool, but the most reliable way is through a gastroscopy.
Urinalysis
Urinalysis is an examination of urine for various cells and chemicals, such as red blood cells, white blood cells, infection, or excessive protein.
Bacterial culture
A culture is a test that determines whether you have an infection.
STD and STI screenings
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections that are passed from one person to another through sexual contact. The causes of STDs are bacteria, parasites, and viruses. If you have sex — oral, anal, or vaginal intercourse and genital touching — you can get an STD. Some infections have symptoms while others may not.
