Trichomonas

Trichomonas

Passed on through unprotected sex, Trichomonas (also commonly known as Trich – cute nickname, right?) is more likely to affect females. Sorry ladies, we don’t make the rules! Just be happy that your reproductive organs aren’t visible outside your body. Guys, we’re talking about you right now.

Common Symptoms:

  • A frothy green-yellow vaginal discharge
  • An unpleasant vaginal odour
  • Itching or burning vulva/vagina

Diagnosis:

  • Vaginal swab
  • Penile swab
  • Urine sample

Treated with antibiotics, patients are encouraged not to consume alcohol for at least 48 hours after treatment. Sorry! The Bud Light and Heineken can wait a few more days. If you and your partner have been sexually active for a period before your diagnosis, it is best for them to also get treated. What is the motto you’ve always heard? Better safe than sorry!

It is advised to consume food whilst taking prescriptions, as the antibiotics are known to cause nausea. If untreated, Trich can cause low birth weight in babies and premature births in pregnant women. If you’re a mother who wants the best for your soon to be child, we strongly recommend forms of barrier protection. Better yet – if your mental and physical being can help it – be abstinent!
