Typhoid Fever

Typhim VI Vaccine

Typhoid vaccine can prevent typhoid fever.

Typhoid fever is an infection of the gut and bloodstream caused by dangerous bacteria called Salmonella typhi. Salmonella typhi is related to the bacteria that cause salmonellosis, another serious intestinal infection, but they aren't the same. It is spread from person to person, usually from eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated with the bacteria from an infected person, which is passed out of their body in their poo or (less commonly) their pee.

This infection can be a life-threatening disease.  Symptoms of infection include persistent high fever, weakness, stomach pain, headache, diarrhoea or constipation, cough, and loss of appetite.

Typhoid fever is found throughout the world, but you're more likely to get it in areas where there is poor sanitation and hygiene. The typhoid vaccine should ideally be given at least 1 month before travel.

Typhim Vi vaccine work by stimulating your body to create antibodies (infection-fighting proteins) that prevent you from getting ill if you become infected with typhoid bacteria.

Remember: neither typhoid vaccine is 100% effective, so you should always take precautions when eating food and drinking water abroad.
